Is it against the law to drive a power chair or scooter in the street?

Question by Donna M: Is it against the law to drive a power chair or scooter in the street?
Some sidewalks are cracked, too narrow, or raised in sections because of tree roots that have grown underneath. Is it against the law to drive in the streets in Maryland under those conditions for the owner of the chairs/scooters? Would those individuals get a ticket?

The same things happens where I live and I dont think that you ever see a police officer give a ticket to one of them even though they are very dangerous on the streets and they should abide by the vehicle laws………..

I did a little search and a magazine called ‘Slate’ was mentioned. Seems like there’s a lot of people selling–it would be easy to get a bunch of catalogs. Also there are some articles in other magazines, probably for elderly or handicapped. Just do some more research. Probably can subscribe through the Internet too, or find an 800 number.
Don’t forget the public library–ask the librarian to help you find articles.
Live well and do good.

Question by jack: I need financing for a mobilityse sportster scooter, my insurance won’t cover and I am too young for medicade.
It seems all the mobility scooter places go to the insurance and medicade for their money. I have a bone disease and my legs are shot. I have to use two canes sometimes.

If you have income and a decent credit report, you could probably take out a personal loan.
If you get a doctors statement saying that the scooter is prescribed, you may be able to go back to the insurance and get it covered.
Otherwise, I would suggest you contact some of the charities in your area, Salvation Army, United Way, etc., and find out if they know of any programs that could help.
